Research in the humanities and social sciences in this field examines how cultural traditions, social practices and values foster social cohesion, identity and innovation. At the same time, social changes, new ways of life and challenges are analysed to provide guidance for policy, education and social action.

The field combines interdisciplinary approaches, digital methods and international networking to tap into cultural knowledge and make it practically applicable – for a society that combines diversity, resilience and innovation.

In addition to institutional funding, which accounts for more than a third of all state funding, the framework programme of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) opens up diverse perspectives for researchers, whilst also providing new scope for experimentation and freedom, within which they can set their own research topics and drive scientific developments forward.
