Through the European Partnerships instrument, the European Commission strengthens international cooperation in research and innovation. Through financial contributions from the Member States and the European Commission, European Partnerships enable the funding of international research projects on a scale that exceeds the scope of national funding programmes. The Resilient Cultural Heritage Partnership will be the first partnership in the field of social sciences and humanities to commence work in 2026.
The partnership’s funding measures aim, on the one hand, to strengthen the preservation of cultural heritage and, on the other, to contribute to climate neutrality through research into cultural heritage, e.g. into traditional processes, techniques and materials.
The aim of the partnership is to create new opportunities for collaborative cultural heritage research at the interface of the humanities and cultural studies, the social sciences and climate research. Funding will be provided for interdisciplinary and international research projects, knowledge-sharing formats and other activities that help to respond more effectively to the challenges and opportunities of climate change and strengthen societal resilience. The research agenda is structured around three focus areas:
- Cultural Heritage and Environment: Strengthening Resilience through Risk Assessment and Management, Climate Mitigation and Adaptation
- Cultural Heritage and Society: Enhancing the Resilience of Society
- Cultural Heritage and Governance: Seizing Opportunities towards Sustainable Development
Over the next ten years, the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) will play an active role in shaping the further development of the research agenda and will participate in transnational calls for proposals for European research projects. The BMFTR will publish national funding guidelines to support institutions in Germany as part of European consortia.
